Christianity in Ethiopia dates to the
ancient Kingdom of Aksum, when the King Ezana first adopted
the faith. Various Christian denominations are now followed.
Of these, the largest and oldest is the Ethiopian Orthodox
Tewahedo Church an Oriental Orthodox church centered in
Ethiopia. The Orthodox Tewahedo Church was part of the Coptic
Orthodox Church until 1959, when it was granted its own
Patriarch by Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch
of All Africa Cyril VI.
The largest pre-colonial Christian church of
Africa, the Ethiopian Church has a membership of between 40
and 46 million, the majority of whom live in Ethiopia, and is
thus the largest of all Oriental Orthodox churches. Next in
size are the various Protestant congregations, who include
13.7 million Ethiopians. The largest Protestant group is the
Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, with about 5
million members. Roman Catholicism has been present in
Ethiopia since the century, and numbers 536,827 believers. In
total, Christians make up about 60% of the total population of
the country.
Although Christianity existed long before the
rule of King
Ezana the Great of the Kingdom
of Axum, the religion took a strong foothold
when it was declared a state religion in 330 AD.
Pinpointing a date as to when Christianity
emerged in Ethiopia is uncertain. The earliest
and best known reference to the introduction of
Christianity is in the New Testament (Acts
8:26-38)
when Philip
the Evangelist converted an Ethiopian court
official in the 1st Century AD. Scholars,
however, argue that Ethiopian (which in Greek
means "burnt face") was a common term used for
black Africans, and that the Queen Candace
served by this official actually ruled in nearby
Nubia (modern Sudan). The word "Candace" may
also refer to the position of "queen" rather
than to a specific person.[citation
needed] Judaism was
practiced in Ethiopia long before Christianity
arrived and the Ethiopian Orthodox Bible
contains numerous Jewish Aramaic words. The Old
Testament in Ethiopia may be a translation of
the Hebrew with possible assistance from
Jews.
According to church
historian Nicephorus, the apostle St.
Matthew later preached the Christian Gospel to
modern-day Ethiopia
after having preached in Judea. Rufinus
of Tyre, a noted church historian, recorded
a personal account as did other church
historians such as Socrates
and Sozemius.

2- Frumentius
After being shipwrecked and captured at an
early age, Frumentius
was carried to Aksum, where he was treated well
with his companion Edesius. At the time, there
was a small population of Christians living
there who sought refuge from Roman
persecution. Once of age, Frumentius and Edesius
were allowed to return to their homelands,
however they chose to stay at the request of the
queen. In doing so, they began to secretly
promote Christianity through the lands.
During a trip to meet with church elders,
Frumentius met with Athanasius,
Pope of Alexandria.
After recommending that a bishop be sent to
proselytize, a council decided that Frumentius
be appointed as a bishop for Ethiopia.
By 331 AD, Frumentius returned to Ethiopia,
he was welcomed with open arms by the rulers who
were at the time not Christian. Ten years later,
through the support of the kings, the majority
of the kingdom was converted and Christianity
was declared the official state religion.

3- Spread of Christianity in Ethiopia
The Syriac Nine Saints and Sadqan
missionaries expanded Christianity far beyond
the caravan routes and the royal court through
monastic communities and missionary settlements
from which Christianity was taught. The efforts
of the Syriac missionaries facilitated the
Churchs expansion deep into the interior and
caused friction with the traditions of the local
people. The Syriac missions also served as
permanent centers of Christian learning in which
Syriac monks finally began to translate the
Bible and other religious texts from Greek into
Ethiopic so that their converts could actually
read Scripture. These translations were vital to
the spread of Christianity, no longer a religion
for the small percentage of Ethiopians who could
read Greek, throughout Ethiopia.
With the translation of Scripture into
Ethiopic allowing for common people to learn
about Christianity, many of the local people
joined the Syriac missions and monasteries,
received religious training through monastic
rule based around communalism, hard work,
discipline, obedience, and asceticism, and
caused the growth of the Churchs influence,
especially among young people who were attracted
to the mystical aspects of the religion. Newly
trained Ethiopian ministers opened their own
schools in their parishes and offered to educate
members of their congregations. Ethiopian kings
encouraged this development because it gave more
prestige to the Ethiopian clergy, attracting
even more people to join, which allowed the
Church to grow beyond its origins as a royal
cult to a widespread religion with a strong
position in the country.
By the beginning of the sixth century, there
were Christian Churches throughout northern
Ethiopia. King Kaleb, of the Aksumite Kingdom,
led crusades against Christian persecutors in
southern Arabia, where Judaism was experiencing
a resurgence that led to persecution of
Christians. King Kalebs reign is also
significant for the spread of Christianity among
the Agaw tribes of central Ethiopia.
Christianity has also spread among Muslims. A
2015 study estimated some 400,000 Christians
from a Muslim background in the country, most of
them Protestants of some form.

4- Alexandria and the early Aksumite Church
During the 6th century, the patriarchate of
Alexandria encouraged the clerical immigration
to Aksum and a program of careful recruitment of
religious leaders in the kingdom to ensure that
the rich and valuable diocese of Aksum remained
under the control of the Alexandrian
patriarchate. The kings and bishops who
encouraged these settlements assigned
missionaries to appropriate areas in Aksum. They
donated money to communities and religious
schools while protecting their occupants from
local anti-Christians. Students of the schools
were recruited, ordained, and sent to work in
parishes in new Christian areas. There is little
evidence about the activities of the daily life
of the early Aksumite Church, but it is clear
that the essential doctrinal and liturgical
traditions were established in the first four
centuries of its creation. The strength of these
traditions was the main driving force behind the
Churchs survival despite its distance from its
patriarch in Alexandria.

5- Judaism, Christianity, and the Solomonic Dynasty
The Solomonic Dynastys legendary origins
come from an Ethiopian myth called the Kebre
Negast. According to the story, Queen Makeda,
who took the Ethiopian throne in the 10th
century, B.C., travelled to Jerusalem to learn
to be a good ruler from King Solomon, who was
famous worldwide for his wisdom and capabilities
as a ruler. King Solomon agreed to take Makeda
as his student and taught her how to be a good
queen. Queen Makeda was so impressed with
Solomon that she converted to Judaism and
provided Solomon with many gifts. Before Makeda
returned home, the two had a son together.
Solomon had a dream in which God said that his
and Makedas son would be the head of a new
order. In response, he sent Makeda home but told
her to send their son back to Jerusalem when he
came of age to be taught Jewish lore and law.
Makeda did as she was told and sent Menilek I,
their son, to Jerusalem to be taught by Solomon,
who offered to make him the prince of Jerusalem.
However, Menilek declined and instead returned
to Ethiopia, anointed by his father and God to
be the king of Ethiopia.
The Kebre Negast exemplifies the importance
of Judaism, and subsequently, of Christianity to
the Ethiopian people, serving as a source of
Ethiopian national pride and providing a
justification for the idea of Ethiopians as a
chosen people of God. More importantly to the
Solomonic Dynasty however, it provided the
grounds for the restored Solomonic Empire, so
named because of its renewed fervor for the
connection of King Solomon to Ethiopian royalty,
which began under Emperor Yekuno Amlak (r.
1270-1285) and was ruled and justified by
Christianity until the late twentieth century.
The Muslim city of Yifat was conquered by
Ethiopia in 1270, under Yekuno Amlak, which
caused officials in Cairo to use their influence
to prevent a new bishop from being sent to
Ethiopia. This action crippled the Ethiopian
Church as well as the power of the emperor. By
the time that Amda Siyon (r. 1314-1344) took the
throne in 1314, Sabradin of Yifat led a united
Muslim front made up of people angered by
Christian rule, destroying churches in Ethiopia
and forcing Christians to convert to Islam.
Siyon responded with a savage attack that
resulted in the defeat of Yifat. Furthermore,
Siyons victory caused the frontier of Christian
power in Africa to expand past the Awash
valley.
The Yafit defeat allowed Alexandria to send
Abuna Yakob, to Ethiopia in 1337 to be its
metropolitan. Yakob reinvigorated the Ethiopian
Church, which had been without a leader for
almost 70 years, by ordaining new clergy and
consecrating long-standing churches that had
been built during the power void. Furthermore,
Yakob deployed a corps of monks into the newly
obtained lands. These monks were often killed or
injured by the conquered people, but, through
hard work, faith, and promises that local elites
could keep their positions through conversion,
the new territories were converted to
Christianity.

6- The Sabbatarian controversy
One of the more fervent monks appointed by
Abuna Yakob was Abba
Ewostatewos (c. 12731352). Ewostatewos
designed a monastic ideology stressing the
necessity for isolation from state influences.
He insisted that the people and the Church
return to the teachings of the Bible.
Ewostatewoss followers were called Ewostathians
or Sabbatarians, due to their emphasis on
observing the Sabbath on Saturday.
Church and state officials united to denounce
Ewostatewos, but they were unable to discredit
him because he avoided serious sins, and they
were unable to effectively argue against him due
to his knowledge of Scripture. Frustrated, the
Church and state officials simply declared him a
deviant due to his love for Old Testament
customs that were falling out of favor in the
Alexandrian Church in the thirteenth century.
Ewostatewos and his followers were persecuted,
and Ewostatewos himself died in exile in Armenia
in 1352.
The Ewostathians retreated into remote
northeastern Ethiopia to escape the society that
refused to ordain them, drove them out of
churches, fired them from official positions,
drove them out of the court, and in some cases,
drove them out of towns completely. Over time,
however, the religious zeal of the Sabbatarians
resulted in missionary activities that
successfully converted adjacent non-Christian
communities and, within a few generations,
Ewostathian monasteries and communities spread
throughout the Eritrean highlands.
The spread of Ewostathianism alarmed the
Ethiopian establishment who still considered
them to be dangerous due to their refusal to
follow state authorities. In response, in 1400, Emperor
Dawit I (r. 13801412) invited the
Sabbatarians to come to court and participate in
a debate. Abba Filipos led the Ewostathian
delegation, which argued their case with
passion, refusing to repudiate the Sabbath,
until the Ethiopian bishop ordered that the
delegation be arrested. The goal of the arrests
was to kill Ewostathianism by removing its
leaders, but its localized nature allowed it to
survive, and, as a result, the arrest of the
Ewostathians only led to a rift in the Ethiopian
Church, between the ruling classs traditional
Christianity and what was becoming a large
movement of Ewostathian Christians.
Emperor Dawit realized that jailing the
Sabbatarians was a mistake and ordered their
release in 1403 to celebrate a Christian victory
over Muslims. Dawit decreed that the
Sabbatarians would be allowed to observe the
Sabbath on Saturday and return to their normal
activities, but he also decreed that Sunday
would be observed as the only Sabbath at
court.
After Dawit's proclamation, Ewostathianism
enjoyed impressive growth. This growth was
noticed by Dawit's successor, Emperor
Zara Yakob (r. 14341468) who realized that
the energy of the Sabbatarians could be useful
in reinvigorating the church and promoting
national unity. The Church, when Yakob took the
throne, was impressively widespread, but the
consequence of so many different peoples being
part of the same church was that there were
often many different messages spread throughout
the empire, as the clergy was split between
followers of Alexandria and Ewostathians, who
refused to follow the hierarchy of
Alexandria.
Emperor Yakob called for a compromise in
1436, meeting with two bishops, Mikail and
Gabriel, sent by the see of St. Mark. Yakob
convinced the bishops that if Alexandria agreed
to accept the Ewostathian view of the Sabbath,
then the Ewostathians would agree to recognize
Alexandrian authority. Next, Yakob travelled to
Aksum for his coronation, remaining there until
1439 and reconciling with the Sabbatarians, who
agreed to pay feudal dues to the emperor.
In 1450, the conflict officially came to an
end, as Mikail and Gabriel agreed to recognize
the Sabatarians' observance of the Sabbath, and
the Sabbatarians agreed to adopt the sacrament
of Holy
Orders, which they had previously considered
to be illegitimate due to its dependence on the
authority of the church in Alexandria.

7- Isolation as a Christian nation
With the emergence of Islam
in the 7th century, Ethiopia's Christians became
isolated from the rest of the Christian world.
The head of the Ethiopian church has been
appointed by the patriarch
of the Coptic
church in Egypt,
and Ethiopian monks had certain rights in the church
of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
Ethiopia was the only region of Africa to
survive the expansion of Islam as a Christian
state.

8- Jesuit missionaries
In 1441 some Ethiopian monks travelled from
Jerusalem to attend the Council
in Florence which discussed possible union
between the Roman
Catholic and Greek
Orthodox churches.
The arrival of the Christian monks caused
something of a sensation. It began two centuries
of contact in which there were hopes to bring
the Ethiopians into the Catholic fold (the
doctrinal problem was that they inclined to miaphysitism
(considered a heresy by the Catholics)
associated with the Coptic
church of Egypt). In 1554 Jesuits
arrived in Ethiopia to be joined in 1603 by Pedro
Pez, a Spanish missionary
of such energy and zeal that he has been called
the second apostle of Ethiopia (Frumentius being
the first). The Jesuits were expelled in 1633
which was then followed by two centuries of more
isolation until the second half of the 19th
century.

1- Fondation
L'glise thiopienne orthodoxe est une des premires
glises chrtiennes du continent africain.
Plusieurs versions ont exist quant l'introduction
du christianisme en thiopie. La plus ancienne mention
est celle du baptme d'un eunuque tant au service de
la reine
Candace par le
diacre Philippe au
Ier sicle.
Cependant rien ne prouve que cela ait eu des
consquences en thiopie mme cette poque. Une
autre version, tire d'un texte apocryphe, fait
intervenir
saint Matthieu lui-mme qui serait venu baptiser
un roi axoumite et y aurait connu le martyre
Toutefois, la version la plus vraisemblable renvoie
au rle de
Frumence au
IVe sicle.

Une glise des trois conciles
L'glise d'thiopie est l'une des glises d'orient de thologie
miaphysite ayant rejet les dogmes tablis lors du
concile de Chalcdoine (451).
Au
VIIe sicle,
les
conqutes musulmanes et l'installation de
plusieurs sultanats dans la
Corne de l'Afrique l'isolent partiellement du
reste du monde chrtien. C'est la source du mythe du
Royaume du prtre Jean.
partir du
XIIIe sicle,
avec la prise de pouvoir par la
dynastie salomonide, l'glise connat une priode
de renouveau thologique et de renforcement de ses
positions. Elle diffuse la religion dans le pays, y
instaure un systme ducatif, et poursuit le
dveloppement liturgique et artistique dbut sous les
prcdents rgimes. Au
XVIe sicle,
avec la
guerre contre le sultanat d'Adal, le christianisme
thiopien est sur le point de s'effondrer avec le
royaume, comme disparat alors le christianisme en
Nubie. C'est en partie l'arrive de soldats
portugais qui lui permet de survivre. Les
missionnaires qui les accompagnaient sont expulss du
pays en 1632 aprs avoir tent de convertir le pays au
catholicisme.
Sous les rgnes de Yohannes IV et Menelik II, l'glise trouve de forts soutiens
politiques, le premier tente de minimiser la prsence
de missionnaires trangers tandis que le second
profite des
conqutes menes pour encourager en mme temps des
campagnes de christianisation.

L'autonomie
partir de 1926, l'glise entreprend une marche vers
l'autonomie vis--vis du Patriarcat d'Alexandrie et en
1951, elle devient officiellement autocphale.
Jusqu'en 1959, le dirigeant de l'glise d'thiopie
tait un moine gyptien nomm archevque (abouna)
par le patriarche copte d'Alexandrie. Le terme glise
copte d'thiopie tait donc couramment utilis, mais
cette dnomination tend disparatre depuis 1959.
En 1948, un agrment entre les glises d'gypte et
d'thiopie a mis en place un rgime d'autocphalie,
les vques thiopiens obtenant le droit d'lire leur
propre
patriarche pour le remplacement futur de
l'archevque en poste. En 1959, le premier patriarche
thiopien, l'abouna
Basilios, fut dsign et obtint une dernire fois
la validation du
patriarche d'Alexandrie,
Cyrille VI.
En
1965 la
confrence des glises orthodoxes orientales
d'Addis-Abeba runit pour la premire fois les
glises orthodoxes orientales. En
Addis-Abba reoit la visite du
patriarche copte Chenouda III.
Entre 1974 et 1991, sous la direction de la junte
militaire lniniste-marxiste du
Derg, le christianisme thiopien orthodoxe perd
son statut de religion d'tat et son influence
politique est diminue. Depuis 1991, sous la direction
du
Front dmocratique rvolutionnaire du peuple thiopien,
l'thiopie reste un tat lac mais l'glise maintient
une certaine influence ; elle doit faire face
l'arrive de missionnaires vangliques et la monte
d'un islam radical dans la
Corne de l'Afrique.

christianisme apparat en thiopie au dbut du

un groupe de moines, les Neuf
Saints introduisent le monachisme et le monophysisme,
c'est--dire le refus des dfinitions
christiques du concile
de Chalcdoine (451) et contribuent la
diffusion du christianisme. Ils incitent
galement traduire les textes religieux en ge'ez
(ge'ez, Geez -
liturgical of
the Ethiopian
church) .
L'influence du christianisme orthodoxe est
perceptible dans la peinture, la littrature
surtout ge'ez mais aussi dans les habitudes
quotidiennes des thiopiens. Au niveau
artistique, les glises thiopiennes sont
souvent richement dcores et un art chrtien
s'est dvelopp dans le pays. La construction
d'glises et de monastres est un moyen
d'expression architectural, avec des
productions particulirement remarquables comme
les glises
rupestres de Lalibela difies partir du
XIIe sicle.
La littrature ge'ez inclut beaucoup d'uvres
caractre essentiellement religieux: vies de
saints, rcits de miracles, etc., mais aussi
politique (hagiographies, histoires, etc.).
Les chrtiens orthodoxes d'thiopie
respectent les interdits alimentaires de l'Ancien
testament (les seules viandes autorises
sont celles de buf, de chvre et mouton, et de
poulet) et pratiquent un rgime strict sans
produit animal (viande, produits laitiers, ufs
parfois poisson) les mercredis et vendredis
ainsi que pendant les nombreuses priodes de jene
(jusqu' 180 jours par an) ; les
restaurants ne proposent souvent pas de viande
ces jours-l. Par ailleurs, ils ne mangent
normalement que de la viande issue d'animaux
abattus selon le rite orthodoxe. La socit
thiopienne tant trs marque par le
christianisme, les caricatures religieuses ou
insultes l'encontre de personnages bibliques
peuvent tre mal perues.
L'orthodoxie monophysite est reste la
religion officielle de l'thiopie jusqu' la rvolution
de 1974, et l'instauration d'un tat
lac.
2- Autres
christianismes
Au XVIe sicle,
des missionnaires jsuites
tentent de convertir les lites, mais ils sont
expulss du pays en 1633 par le negus Fasiladas. En 1854,
un missionnaire catholique, Mgr de Jacobis, est
encore expuls du pays. Cependant, dans la
deuxime moiti du XIXe sicle,
des catholiques s'installent nouveau
proximit des colonies europennes, franaise
(le territoire
d'Obock devenu la Cte
franaise des Somalis) et italienne (rythre)
qui se dveloppent sur le littoral de la mer
Rouge. Dans l'est du pays au Hararghe,
un missionnaire catholique comme monseigneur
Jarosseau a intgr l'entourage de
dignitaires thiopiens comme le ras
Makonnen et son fils, Tafari, futur empereur Hal
Sellassi Ier. On trouve
une cathdrale Addis-Abeba
ds le dbut du XXe sicle.
Depuis le XXe sicle,
et en particulier aprs la Seconde Guerre
mondiale, de nombreux missionnaires protestants
sont venus dans le pays. Les relations sont
parfois difficiles, en particulier car les
protestants ne reconnaissent pas les saints qui
tiennent une place centrale dans la pratique des
orthodoxes. Toutefois, les protestants taient
bien vus aprs 1941, car ils taient assimils
aux librateurs britanniques. Dans un souci de
diplomatie, et de reconnaissance, l'empereur Hal
Sellassi Ier accepta
l'implantation de missions protestantes,
britanniques et amricaines.
La religion catholique est assimile aux
Italiens qui ont occup
le pays entre 1935 et 1941, et au rgime
fasciste responsable de massacre de civils,
comme celui ordonn
par Graziani en 1937, ou l'excution de
prtres orthodoxes, comme abune
Petros. Pour les dignitaires thiopiens,
l'glise catholique a ferm les yeux sur les
exactions commises pendant cette priode. Les
thiopiens attendent un
pardon du Vatican.
Situation
rare dans le monde, ce sont surtout des
musulmans qui se convertissent la religion
chrtienne protestante. Les orthodoxes, plus
conservateurs, sont attachs leurs racines.
Les musulmans qui deviennent protestants
viennent surtout d'ethnies converties l'islam
entre le XVIIe
et le XXe sicle,
gnralement issues des hauts plateaux,
situation commune par exemple aux Tigrs, o le
protestantisme n'existait pas avant 1941. Dans
l'Est, o l'islam est implant depuis plus
longtemps, le phnomne est beaucoup plus rare,
voire inexistant, car du fait de son histoire,
la culture musulmane y est plus ancre. Aussi,
de nombreux Falashas,
Juifs thiopiens, non reconnus par Isral
deviennent protestants.

عدد أتباعها يبلغ 40 مليون شخص، وهي بذلك ثاني أكبر كنيسة
شرقيّة. ومقرها مدينة أكسوم بإثيوبيا.
وفقًا لتعداد الحكومة لعام 1994 كان 61.6% من سكان إثيوبيا
مسيحيين: تتضمن 50.6% أنباع الكنيسة الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية،
10.1% الطوائف البروتستانتية المختلفة، 0.9% الكنيسة الأثيوبية
الكاثوليكية من السكان). أحدث تعداد حكومي كان في عام 2007، حيث
شكّل المسيحيون 62.8% من مجموع السكان، تصدرت الطوائف المسيحية
كنيسة التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية بسنبة 43.5% من سكان
البلاد، تليها البروتستانت 18.6% والكاثوليك في 0.7%. وبحسب
دراسة تعود إلى عام 2015 حوالي 400,000 مواطن مُسلم إثيوبي
تحول إلى المسيحية.

تاريخ المسيحية في اثيوبيا،
من العصور المبكرة حتى العصور
الوسطى
تًرجِع الكنيسة الأثيوبية
بوادر دخول الديانة
المسيحية إلى البلاد إلى القرن الأول
الميلادي، وفي القرن الرابع أصبحت الديانة
المسيحية الديانة الرسمية لمملكة أكسوميت
الأثيوبية في أيام الملك إيزانا، وذلك بفضل جهود
التبشيرية لفرومينتيوس
السرياني الأصل. استمر اتحاد الكنيسة الأثيوبية مع كنيسة
الأقباط الأرثوذكس حتى بعد سيطرة العرب المسلمين
على أراضي مصر،
واستمرت المراسلات ما بين بطاركة الإسكندرية وملوك
الحبشة والنوبا.
ارتبطت كنيسة
التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية في السياسية،
فمثلًا حصلت كل من سلالة السليمانيون في إثيوبيا
على الشرعية من كنيسة
التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية باعتبارهم من
سلالة الملك داود وسليمان،
فأرتبطت الكنيسة والدولة ارتباطًا وثيقًا في
المملكة الإثيوبيَّة.
مع نهاية القرن
الخامس عشر فتحت البعثات الاستكشافية القادمة
من البرتغال
على وجه الخصوص الباب أمام المبشرين الكاثوليك
للنشاط في منطقة القرن
الأفريقي، واستطاع هؤلاء المبشرون اللاتين في
عهد البابا أوربان الثامن من اجتذاب عدد من
المسيحيين وتأسيس الكنيسة الأثيوبية الكاثوليكية،
من خلال رسامة أول بطريرك
لهم سنة 1622،
لكن هذه الحركات اصطدمت بمعارضة سكان البلاد
خصوصًا مع إحلال الطقوس اللاتينية بدلاً من الطقوس
المحلية، وانتهت بطرد البطريرك المحلي من البلاد
سنة 1636.
لعبت سلالة السليمانيون دور هام في
تاريخ المسيحية في
إثيوبيّا.
2.1-
تاريخ المسيحية في اثيوبيا، في العصور
الحديثة
في القرن
التاسع عشر أخذت البعثات اللاتينية بالتوجه
مجددًا نحو أثيوبيا، وفي العام 1839
أعلن جوستين دي جاكوب أن إعلان الاتحاد مع روما
والإقرار بسلطة البابا
لا يعني مطلقًا التخلي عن الطقوس الأثيوبية
واستبدالها بطقوس لاتينية، لقيت هذه الحركة قبولاً
واسع النطاق في أثيوبيا ما هيأ الجو لوجود ذاتية
أثيوبية مستقلة فنشأت هذه الكنيسة بشكل رسمي تحت
اسم الكنيسة الأثيوبية الكاثوليكية من جديد سنة 1930؛
وما ساعد في انتشار هذه الكنيسة احتلال إيطاليا لأريتيريا
ومناطق من جنوب أثيوبيا
سنة 1936
وقد حاولت إعادة احلال الطقس اللاتيني مجددًا لكن
طرد المبشرين اللاتين في أعقاب الحرب
العالمية الثانية، أدى إلى إيقاف عملية
التحوّل هذه، وتم الاعتراف النهائي بالطقوس
المحلية المتعارف عليها سنة 1951،
وفي 9
أبريل 1961
استحدثت أبرشيتين جديدتين إلى جانب أبرشية أديس
أبابا، ثم استحدثت أبرشيتين أيضًا سنة 1995،
أما في إرتيريا
فقد انتشرت هذه الكنيسة بشكل أوسع، وعند التنظيمات
الأولية سنة 1961
كانت تضم أبرشيتين ثم استحدثت أبرشية جديدة سنة 2003،
وبهذا أصبحت هذه الكنيسة مؤلفة من ستة أبرشيات،
ثلاثة منهم في أثيوبيا
وثلاث في إرتيريا.
وفي عام 1439
م في عهد الملك
زارا
يعقوب قاد حوار ديني ما بين الأنبا جيورجيس
وزائر فرنسي إلى إرسال سفارة من إثيوبيا
إلى الفاتيكان.
إن فترة التأثير اليسوعي والتي كسرت في أثناءها
قنوات الاتصال مع الكنيسة
القبطية كانت بداية لفصل جديد من تاريخ كنيسة
أثيوبيا، حيث بدأ عمل الإرساليات الكاثوليكية في
البلاد بدعم من البرتغاليين،
وجاء ذلك الدعم كجزء من كفاح البرتغاليين ضد الدولة
العثمانية المسلمة وضد سلطنة
عدوليس الإسلامية الواقعة شرق إثيوبيا
للسيطرة على طرق التجارة إلى الهند
عبر البحر
الأحمر.
توصلت في تاريخ 13 يوليو 1948
م كل من الكنيستين القبطية والإثيوبية إلى اتفاق
مهد لانفصال واستقلال الكنيسة الأثيوبية، حيث قام
بطريرك الإسكندرية للأقباط في ذلك العام برسامة
خمسة أساقفة لهذه الكنيسة وفوضهم بانتخاب بطريرك
جديد لهم يكون له السلطان لاحقا لرسامة أساقفة جدد
لكنيسته. وقد اكتملت فصول تلك الاتفاقية عندما قام
بطريرك الأقباط البابا يوساب
الثاني بإقامة باسيليوس رئيس أساقفة على
الكنيسة الأثيوبية وهو من أصل أثيوبي في تاريخ 14
يناير 1951،
وبعد ذلك عام 1959
قام بطريرك الكنيسة القبطية البابا كيرلس
السادس بتتويج باسيليوس كأول بطريرك على كنيسة
أثيوبيا الأرثوذكسية.
مصلى تابوت العهد في كنيسة سيدتنا
مريم من جبل صهيون، في أكسوم، يُدّعى أنها تحتوي
على تابوت عهد موسى
وألواحه.
توفي البطريرك باسيليوس
عام 1971
وخلفه في ذلك العام ثيوفيلوس، ومع سقوط الإمبراطور هيلا
سيلاسي عام 1974
فصلت الكنيسة في إثيوبيا عن الدولة، وبدأت حكومة
إثيوبيا الجديدة - الماركسية - بتأميم
الأراضي بما في ذلك أراضي الكنيسة، وفي عام 1976
اُعتقل البطريرك ثيوفيلوس من قبل السلطات العسكرية
وتم إعدامه بسرية في وقت لاحق من ذلك العام، فقامت
الحكومة بأمر الكنيسة بانتخاب بطريركا جديدا لها
فتم تتويج تيكلا هيمانوت على هذا المنصب، رفضت
الكنيسة القبطية انتخاب ذلك البطريرك على اعتبار
أن المجمع المقدس للكنيسة الأثيوبية لم يقر بعزل
البطريرك السابق ثيوفيلوس، لآنه لم يكن يُعرف بعد
للعلن بأنه تم إعدامه من قبل الحكومة فكان لايزال
يُعتبر البطريرك الشرعي لإثيوبيا، وعلى إثر ذلك
انقطعت وسائل الاتصال - على الصعيد الرسمي - بين
الكنيستين.
لم يتعامل البطريرك الجديد تيكلا هيمانوت مع
الحكومة الإثيوبية بالسلاسة التي كانت تتوقعها
منه، لذلك عندما توفي هذا البطريرك عام 1988
تم انتخاب ميركوريوس
عضو البرلمان الإثيوبي الموالي للحاكم لهذا
المنصب. في عام 1991
ومع سقوط نظام منغستو
هيلا مريام الديكتاتوري وقدوم الجبهة
الشعبية الديمقراطية الثورية الإثيوبية للحكم،
عُزل البطريرك ميركوريوس بضغط من الشعب والحكومة
وانتخبت الكنيسة باولس بطريركا جديدا لها، وفر
البطريرك السابق ميركوريوس خارج البلاد وأعلن من
منفاه بأن عزله تم بالإكراه وعلى ذلك فهو لايزال
البطريرك الشرعي لإثيوبيا، تبعه إلى ذلك عدة
أساقفة وشكلوا خارج إثيوبيا مجمعا مقدسُا لهم
تعترف به عدة كنائس إثيوبية في أمريكا
الشمالية وأوروبا
وتعتبر بأن ميركوريوس هو البطريرك الحقيقي، بنما
استمر المجمع المقدس الآخر داخل إثيوبيا
يقر بشرعية البطريرك باولس. وبعد أن استقلت إريتريا
عن إثيوبيا
عام 1991
م أعلنت الكنيسة
القبطية الأرثوذكسية انفصال كنيسة
التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإريترية، فأصبح لها
بذلك مجمعها المقدس الخاص المستقل عن المجمع
الأثيوبي الأم.

الثقافةالمسيحية في اثيوبيا، اللغة الطقسية
تقام معظم المراسم الاحتفالية الدينية باللغة
الجعزية، والتي أصبحت لغة رسمية للكنيسة على
أقرب تقدير بعد وصول من دعيوا بالقديسين التسعة
إلى أثيوبيا،
والذين قدموا إليها هربا من بطش الإمبراطور
البيزنطي بسبب رفضهم لمقررات مجمع
خلقيدونية عام 451
م.
ويوجد ترجمة للنسخة السبعينية لكتاب
العهد القديم تُرجم من اللغة
اليونانية إلى اللغة
الجعزية، وكان الامبراطور هيلا
سيلاسي خلال فترة حكمه قد رعى عملية إصدار نسخ
رسمية باللغة
الأمهرية لمخطوطات قديمة مكتوبة باللغة
الجعزية. ويتم الوعظ اليوم في كنيسة التوحيد
الأثيوبية باللغات المحلية.

2.2-
الثقافةالمسيحية في اثيوبيا، العمارة
يوجد العديد من الكنائس المنحوتة في الصخر في أثيوبيا،
اكثرها شهرة هي الكنائس الإثني عشر في لاليبيلا
شمال البلاد، ويوجد أيضا نمط آخر في هندسة الكنائس
الأثيوبية هو البازيليك، ومن أشهر كنائس البازيليك
في أثيوبيا
هي بازيليك سيدتنا مريم من صهيون في مدينة أكسوم،
وفي القرن السادس الميلادي كان لهندسة الكنائس
الأثيوبية تأثير قوي على طريقة بناء الكنائس في
المناطق القريبة كصنعاء
وفي معظم أنحاء شبه
الجزيرة العربية.
يوجد شكلين مميزين لبناء
الكنائس الأثيوبية، الأول المربع أو المستطيل
والذي يتواجد في تجراي والثاني الشكل الدائري
وتجده في أمهارة
وفي شيوة.

الثقافة المسيحية في اثيوبيا، التقاليد التوراتية
تضع كنيسة التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية ثاني
أكبر الكنائس المسيحية
الشرقية في العالم تركيز أكثر على تعاليم العهد
القديم مقارنًة في الكنائس المسيحية الأخرى،
وتحث أتباعها على التمسك في بعض الممارسات التي ما
تزال موجودة في الديانة
اليهودية، خصوصًا لدى اليهودية
الأرثوذكسية.
تلتزم كنيسة التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية في شريعة
الطهارة الموجودة في العهد
القديم والتي تحث على ضرورة الإغتسال أو الوضوء
للتطهر قبل تأدية فرائض دينية معينة، وبعد أي شيء
يسبِّب النجاسة. فضلًا على ضرورة غسل اليدين قبل
الأكل أو الصلاة، وبعد الإستيقاظ من النوم، وبعد
زيارة المدافن أو دخول دورة المياه.
تمنع كنيسة التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية
المرأة التي تكون في فترة الحيض
والأشخاص غير الطاهرين وفقًا للشريعة من دخول الكنيسة>
يُذكر أن منع المرأة التي تكون في فترة الحيض من
دخول الكنيسة حتى نهاية فترة الحيض موجود أيضًا من
قبل الكنائس المسيحية الشرقية الأخرى. وتلتزم
كنيسة التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية في تنظيم
قواعد الحبل والولادة
المذكورة في سفر
اللاويين وكيفية الطهور بعدها إذ إن المرأة
الحامل والحائض تعتبر نجسة.
تفرض كنيسة التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية إلى
جانب كنيسة
التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإريترية والكنيسة
القبطية الأرثوذكسية شريعة الختان
على الذكور في اليوم الثامن من ولادة الطفل
وتعطيه بُعد
ديني.
كما تقوم كنيسة التوحيد الأرثوذكسية الإثيوبية إلى
جانب الأدفنتست
بفرض سلسة من الشرائع على الطعام وهي تشابه القيود
الموجودة في الديانة
اليهودية والتي تعرف بالكشروت.
